Open Hearts Big Dreams Fund is a 501(3)(c) not for profit
that believes the chance to dream big dreams
should not depend on where in the world you are born.
Ethiopia is Africa’s second most populous country. Ethiopia’s population is 44% children, ages 0-14 (43 million out of 97 million total). Only 5.5% of children attend pre-school or kindergarten. Only 68% of ages 7-12 attend primary school. Adult literacy stands at 49% with men at 57% and women at 41%. Only 7.5% of the adult population have any post-secondary education.
MISSION: Inspiring and enabling youth, their communities and organizations who serve them by providing literacy, education, commercial and leadership opportunities. Our focus is to support 501(c)(3) organizations and their programs that provide literacy, K-12 education, and leadership as well as those that support the parents and communities where the kids live, in Ethiopia.
This is the sixth Open Hearts Big Dreams (OHBD) Fund Gala event and the first as a standalone not-for-profit. Since this event began in 2011, we've raised close to half a million dollars to support K-12 literacy and education in Ethiopia. None of this would be possible without many OPEN HEARTS willing to enable BIG DREAMS for kids half a world away! So we are doing it again this year and aiming even higher. Our fundraising goal is $150K to support OHBD Fund 2017 priorities including:
Early Reader Books Project
with Jane Kurtz and Ready, Set, Go Books to close a critical gap and increase literacy in both the youngest students and their communities. http://openheartsbigdreams.org/2017/03/books-ready-set-go/
Technology and Coding project
to bring the power of technology and building to kids in Ethiopia.
Art Education Project
to connect artists and share the transformative power of arts to kids so they can reimagine their future possibilities.
This Seattle event provides sustaining funds for OHBD projects and priorities. This beautiful evening will be a lively celebration of the cuisine, music, art, and poetry of Ethiopia, featuring silent and live auctions, a wine wall, and a raffle. The OHBD event is an opportunity to learn more about Open Hearts Big Dreams' bold plans and support its goal to increase opportunities for kids in Ethiopia.
